The Karen are one of the many people groups that occupy Myanmar (or Burma). Traditionally they have lead a quiet agrarian lifestyle, but this life has been lost to the mess of the murder, rape, forced labor, and destroyed homes at the hands of the Myanmar Government. For decades the Karen people have been fleeing into the jungle, eventually moving to refugee camps across the border in Thailand. Though the refugee camps are safe compared to life in Burma, the Karen have spent many years in waiting, experiencing little freedom, resources, or choice. They leave this “waiting room” and are dropped into a bustling city where people are expected to fight for themselves, independently make good choices, and carefully ask questions.
